Ranjit Singh was born in Birmingham in 1967 - Studied BA in Fine Art at Birmingham City University (Bournville School of art) from 1994 to 1998.
Singh incorporates pseudonyms to ensure economic, racial and formal/artistic autonomy, his subject matter explores socio-economic/political influences on the human condition, with an interest in dysfunctional systems and conflict. Singh's work investigates and challenges normality, unravelling the conditioned perception we have of our structured environment.
Stating: “My art is about the human condition and everything it encapsulates and at the same time maintaining normality and what the public perceives as traditional in fine art".
The artists experiences have in part influenced the direction of his practice - social patterns that maintain inequalities, recognising at an early age that education is a forme of contained de education Singh spent time in various state instructions, in what he explains as a “Controlled set experiences recorded at the time in the form of text and other material” he goes on to explain “Being an Asian Indian, Mohican - punk in the late 70s created a social-cultural conflict, These experiences in part function to inform the artist within his practice.
Soon after graduating in 1998 Singh started exploring alternative venues for public engagement, with social consciousness at the core of his objectives, Singh identified a space within a council tower block for a series of exhibitions. (Ingoldsby Estate Northfield Birmingham). Singh believes art has to be socially inclusive and must challenge to progress.
Ranjit's work has progressed to incorporate the use of technology developing an easily distributable format stating: “My aim is to develop an art format that can engage a wide audience”. The works have developed to have a dual function one of engagement via the Internet and derivative prints that can function in an alternative environment.
